Life As We Know It
So here at last we approach the end of 2016. Its crazy to look back and realize that the past year flashed before your eyes and it seems just like yesterday you were ushering in 2016. This time last year, I sat at home on my couch and tried to stay awake till the New Year, but when 11 P.M. rolled around I ended up passing out on my bed. I woke up the next morning and much to my surprise I felt no different (sarcasm). It’s like when you turn a year older and everyone asks if you feel any different but obviously nothing actually feels different.
Its simply just another day. So often we wake up and go through the motions, repeating this day by day until we are old and eventually lowered down into our graves. This isn’t how life was meant to be. Each day we should look to get one step closer to accomplishing our dreams and making the most of every minute we have. I know, I know, its cliché but its true and unfortunately many people don’t get it!
My challenge for 2016 was to wake up every morning with a purpose and to think of one thing to be thankful for before the day started. The more I challenged myself to do this, the more I noticed my perspective on life change in a positive way. I started using my time more meaningfully and made memories I wouldn’t have if I hadn’t woken up with this positive mind set.
By waking up grateful, I realized how good I have it and started to see value in things I hadn’t before. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs this year but as I look back on it, I’ve learned to learn from the trials of life and keep moving forward. Even though I can’t control difficult situations, I’ve realized I can control my attitude and that has made all the difference.
With 2017 approaching, I challenge you to look back on your year and pick out 5-10 things you learned over the course of 2016. How did 2016 help you get one step closer to your goals and aspirations? What lessons did you learn from 2016 that have made you a better you? Who and what do you aspire to be and do this upcoming year? What are your goals for 2017?
The biggest mistake I see in the weight room isn’t people doing exercises wrong or doing the wrong rep schemes, but rather not setting goals for themselves to achieve. I’ve been in the weight room before and worked out with people who have literally benched the same weight for a solid 3 months and ask me why they aren’t getting stronger or bigger and its a no brainer.
In life, setting goals is just as essential which in turn, gives us meaning and purpose. Set goals and don’t be scared of failure. I love the quote by Thomas Edison where he says “I have not failed, I just found 10,000 ways that didn’t work”. Thankfully for him he didn’t give up and the light bulb came to fruition. He set a goal for himself and did everything in his power to accomplish it no matter how many times he failed.
Don’t just set goals because the New Years is here, but learn to set goals for yourself everyday. You will find more purpose and meaning in life, and strive to create the life you want and deserve. If you do this, I guarantee 2017 will be a year to remember, and you will come to truly appreciate this beautiful journey we call life. I truly wish everyone a Happy New Years and may this year be the best one yet!
